Our Values
– UNDER REVISION –
What brings the Riot Rocketz together is, above all, our love of roller derby and our wish to build a community where people feel welcome. Everyone in our league may have different needs and ambitions, and we want to support them together.
This applies especially to the sport. Our training sessions aim to meet the needs of both those who are mainly here for fun rather than competition and those who want to compete against other teams and help our league move up through the divisions. Alongside independent bouts with fellow leagues, we also take part in the Bundesliga each season. This involves hosting home bouts and travelling to away games in other cities.
We strive to make our league a space free from discrimination. We work towards this by respecting everyone’s individuality and treating one another with care and appreciation.
Beyond the track
Self-determination is another important value for us. We see ourselves as a grassroots, democratically run league. Once a month, we hold a plenary meeting to discuss current agenda items and make decisions. We aim to make these decisions without hierarchy and by consensus. Everyone in the Riot Rocketz can add items to the agenda, take part in discussions, and vote.
We also want every skater to help shape our league by taking part in working groups. These groups cover a wide range of areas, including training, officiating, public relations, bout organizing, merchandise, and many more.
We’re a section of the Roter Stern Leipzig sports club (RSL). Even so, we rely on Rocketz who are willing to contribute to both the league and the club beyond training. This commitment also extends to the wider national and international roller derby community. Despite its growing profile, roller derby is still a relatively small community without large institutions behind it, and it depends on everyone’s support. We feel connected to this community and support other leagues.
Beginners
We offer training tailored to the needs of new skaters. Sessions cover basic skating skills and the rules of the game.
We play roller derby as a FLINTA* team. Cis men are also welcome to get involved, for example as officials or in one of our working groups.
Everyone is welcome in our league, regardless of their:
- gender identity
- age (you just need to be 18 or older)
- body shape
- fitness level
- previous experience
We don’t accept disrespectful behaviour or any form of discrimination against marginalised groups.
Competition
Both of our teams, the Space Invaders and the Sun Blockers, take part in competitive play.
The Space Invaders compete as a FLINTA* team in bouts outside the Bundesliga and take part in scrimmages. The team is open to skaters of different experience levels, including those who want to compete outside the Bundesliga and/or gain more experience on track.*
Die Sun Blockers The Sun Blockers compete as a FLINTA* team in the Roller Derby Bundesliga. The team competes in the second division.
